Louie A Hall (larger version)
The Grenfell Louie A. Hall Bed and Breakfast was formally known as the Old Forteau Nursing Station which was built by the International Grenfell Association in 1946. It was called Louie A. Hall Nursing Station after its benefactor who donated funds to have it replace Denison Cottage which was built in 1907. Louie Hall was good friend of Lady Grenfell. When she visited in the early 30's and saw the condition of Denison Cottage Hospital. She donated funds to build a new hospital in Forteau.

But, war broke out before it could be started and it was delayed until 1945 and completed in 1946. In the meantime Ms. Hall passed away, but the Nursing Station was still named after her. Louie A. Hall remained a hospital until it was replaced with a modern facility in 1983. Then it was used as Staff residence until 1992.

We purchased it in 1993. Restored it and open as a B and B in July of 1994. Over three generations of people along the Labrador Straits was born in this building, including my husband and myself. The land was originally in the James family, which belonged to my great grandfather. Part of the land was given to Dr. Grenfell to build his hospital.

We not only purchased the old hospital, but were successful in getting back a plot of land that belonged to my family during the 1800's. Each guest room is named after different staff or nurses who contributed to Old Nursing Station.
